**Vercel AI Gateway Introduces Virtual Models for Model Switching and Fallbacks**

Vercel introduced Virtual Models on AI Gateway. A virtual model is an abstraction over the model string and configurations apps and developers use. With a single virtual model ID, users can switch and update underlying models, configure fallbacks and priority, and enforce Zero Data Retention centrally. For developers, the practical benefit is that swapping model providers or adjusting fallback logic no longer requires changing model names in code—configuration management moves to the gateway layer.
